The Miami Bat Squad was selected by the South Florida Association of Environmental Professionals to receive the 2014 LEAF Award (Leadership in Environmental Achievements and Foresight), for the category of technology and innovation for conservation. Specifically, the Bat Squad was selected because of their innovative use of free acoustical analysis apps to identify FBB calls, and then to use this technology to "crowd-source" identification of where and when the bats are flying.
The award will be presented at the SFAEP annual symposium on November 5, 2014 in Davie (Broward County). This award is a "project award" - it goes to the project (innovative use of the apps and crowd-sourcing), as opposed to being awarded to an individual or company.
