Math Major Takes First Place at National Competition

A "Worlds Ahead" math major, Yelen Nunez, represented FIU at the 2011 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida this passed June. Under the instruction and guidance of Domitila Fox, instructor of mathematics and course coordinator for business calculus, Nunez outperformed students from around the country in the "Teaching a Business Course" category. She also places first at the state-level competition earlier this year, beating out over 25 other teams in her division.

Nunez began working with Fox as a learning/instructional assistant in her business calculus course in the summer of 2010. On average, she spends six hours a week offering additional instruction and recitation to students, enhancing the learning experience and doubling the course's passing rate! With their interactive learning system, the Fox-Nunez team lead the only lecture hall calculus course in the department.

"Because of Yelen's invaluable assistance the course is a success! She is a superb teacher and leader in education" - Domitila Fox

Nunez graduates this summer and will start graduate work in FIU's Department of Math & Statistics soon after. We congratulate the Fox-Nunez team on their "Worlds Ahead" performance this summer.
